Whether you are an experienced player or a beginner, one of the most important questions you can ask yourself is: Can my computer control this game? There are many ways to answer this question, and countless variables that can cloud your actual results, thanks to the endless tricks of PC build variations and game optimization.
If you want to know how to determine if your computer can run the game you want, read on. In this article we will explain everything you need to know, and at the end you will be able to see if the game works on your system or not.

Know your exact specifications
First, you need to determine what your specifications are. Otherwise you can’t know what games your PC can run. While some tools automatically determine these points for you, the most comprehensive and accurate methods require that you know the detailed specifications of your system. Tools like Speccy can do this for you, but may not be as accurate for commodity PCs and some GPUs.
In my case, Speccy works fine – don’t judge me because I’m only running on one channel, one of my sticks is broken – but if you can’t get a detailed picture of your CPU, RAM, and video card, you may need to do some more research.
If you z. For example, if you use an AMD or Nvidia graphics chip, your operating software (GeForce Experience or Radeon) can determine which graphics chip is in your system. If you are using Intel integrated graphics, just type the name of your Intel processor into Google and you can get it.
If you are using a commercially available desktop or laptop computer, you should look up the exact model number so that you can find out the detailed specifications in case any of the above methods fail.
Once you have determined the exact specifications of your system, write them down or save them in a notepad file; after all, you don’t want to have to start over if you need them in the future. Let’s go to the next step.

UserBenchmark will be an indispensable tool to compare the capabilities of your own system with the recommended and minimum specifications on the game’s website. For example, let’s look at Devil May Cry 4’s Steam page (and its minimum/recommended specs) to see if I can run that game.
All of the components listed here are ten years old, so it may be difficult for you to compare the specifications of your current system with them to determine expected performance levels. You’ll often find requirements pages that list GPUs and CPUs that are several generations old (note that DMC4 recommends Windows Vista… for optimal performance), even if the game has just been released.
As for RAM, it’s all about how much RAM you have and that’s relatively simple. And to make sure you have enough space on your hard drive, open File Explorer and click on This PC. Here you can see your hard drives.
Using UserBenchmark’s GPU comparison tool, I can compare my relatively modern GTX 760 to the GeForce 8600GT listed on this page to determine roughly what performance I can expect.

If the game is not on Steam, you’ll have to do some more work….. Instead, try googling something like system requirements for the name of the game. For example, a Google search for Overwatch system requirements led me to this page from Blizzard!

SystemRequirementsLab is a tool that allows you to automatically determine if your PC can run the game or not. It’s a little more in-depth than using product pages – especially ones that aren’t as accurate as they should be – but not as accurate as finding benchmarks or considering specific scenarios in which a game might work even if it doesn’t meet their requirements; it’s kind of like a sticker. (We’ll come back to this later!)
Once you run the program, it stores information about your system in the form of a cookie in your browser. As long as you don’t delete your browser data, you can always come back to SystemRequirementsLab to check your compatibility with different games!
Best practice: Find the reference points that fit your parameters!

The best way is to find tests or videos of people playing the game with your specifications. If you have a GTX 760, like me for example, you can search for, say, a GTX 760 PUBG and you’ll see a video like the one we embedded below that shows a gamer playing PUBG with that graphics card.

You see, product pages are not always accurate. Sometimes they overestimate the system requirements, and sometimes (usually with older titles that are still constantly being updated, like Team Fortress 2) they underestimate them.
The only way to know for sure if your system is working properly in the game is to run the game itself. For free-to-play games, this is relatively easy, but if the game isn’t F2P, your best bet is to find a modern video of someone with similar specs playing the game in action, like us!

Assuming you are below the minimum requirements on the product page, or SystemRequirementsLab says so. To start, do a little strategic research on Google to see if this is the case.
But what if you can’t find the right benchmark or if you’re not satisfied with the performance you’re seeing?
You may have other options. These are computer games, and the advantage of playing on this platform is that the possibilities are almost endless.
In the case of Valve games like Team Fortress 2 and CS:GO, there are numerous performance configuration files you can use to achieve higher frame rates.
There are other tools you can use to get a little more out of your system, such as B. Windows 10 Game Mode or Razer Game Booster.
If it is only one part and there is not a big difference in performance, it is usually not a problem. In general, the GPU is the main focus, followed by the CPU and possibly the amount of RAM used.
With UserBenchmark, you can get a good idea of the gap between what you are running and the recommended components. However, if you are new to the world, you should consider seeking advice before buying a game you may not feel comfortable with.
However, at some point there will be scenarios where you just can’t run the game with satisfactory performance. Lately, some modern titles refuse to run at all if your system has less than 6GB of RAM, though this is usually rare.
If you can’t get the game to work and you spent real money to buy it, we suggest you ask for your money back. Steam, UPlay, GOG and Origin offer full refunds in this scenario! Most retailers offer this option as well, but if you return the game, you must keep the receipt.
Demonstrations and trials
You can also run a demo version of the game, but these have unfortunately become quite rare in today’s video games. (Steam also offers free trial versions of games, so if you’re interested but not sure, give it a try).
If the game you’re interested in has a demo, be smart and try it out before you buy it! Even with a refund, it often takes several days to get the money back for a game that doesn’t work with your system.
