How to Skip Disk Checking on Windows 10 Startup

Check Disk, or better known by its acronym CHKDSK, is a tool built into Microsoft Windows that scans and repairs hard drives for errors and bad sectors. This quick guide shows you how to ignore or disable Disk Check in Windows 10 so that it no longer runs at startup.

Why is the hard disk check forced whenis started.

If Disk Check runs automatically every time you turn on your laptop or desktop without your permission, it may indicate one of two possibilities:

  • Windows noticed an unusual behavior when shutting down or restarting.
  • Windows has detected problems on one of your hard drives.

If you try to pause and cancel the disk check by pressing any key, you can temporarily cancel the disk check for the current session. However, the disk verification process is repeated on each boot until the process is completed at least once and there are no problems on the disk.

What are you doing?

Let’s not ignore the obvious. Re-checking the forced boot disk indicates possible disk errors or even hardware failures. The correct action is to complete the disk check.

While the disk is being checked, it is automatically checked for errors and corrected. Once the errors are fixed, Windows stops scanning the disk at startup if no other problems are detected on either disk.

If an error is discovered during the volume control which cannot be corrected, you will be informed in the control reports at the end of the control. If this is the case, it usually indicates that your hard drive is starting to fail or has already failed. Quickly back up any existing data on the drive if you don’t want to lose it later.

Skip Disk Check in Windows 10

There are two ways to have Windows 10 override the scheduled startup disk check. If one doesn’t work, try the other.

Stop disk authentication via the command line

  1. Search for cmd in the Windows 10 search bar. Right-click Command Prompt in the search results, and click Run as Administrator.

  1. Type the following command: chkntfs /x c:

    • Message: Replace C: with the drive letter you want to use to stop the disk scan when Windows starts.
    • The parameter /x deactivates the automatic monitoring of the selected actuators during commissioning.
    • To stop scanning multiple drives, add drive letters to the end of the command. For example: chkntfs /x c : d : e :

Disable disk check at startup via Registry Editor.

Warning: Modifying the registry can cause serious problems and, if done incorrectly, can damage the operating system. Proceed at your own risk.

  1. Look in the Windows 10 Start menu/Search bar and open regedit (registry editor).

  1. In the Registry Editor window, navigate to the following path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSession Manager.
  2. Double-click the BootExecute button in the right pane.

  1. In the value data, change the value to:autocheck autochk /k:C *

  1. Click OK to save your changes.

Close the Registry Editor and restart the computer. The next time you start Windows, the disk check does not need to be repeated.

If thedisk check continues each time the disk is booted.

If the disk scan continues to run at every startup, even after trying the methods described above, you should seriously consider letting the disk complete the scan. If the scan reveals an error that cannot be corrected, you may need to back up your existing data before it is too late and replace the drive.

If you don’t care that the hard drive is bad and you could lose data on the hard drive when it eventually fails, and you just want to avoid having the hard drive checked when Windows boots, you can create a shortcut to run chkntfs /x c:. (Replace c: with the drive letter you want to ignore at startup) and paste the shortcut as your startup program.

To create a shortcut, right-click anywhere on the desktop, select New, and then Shortcut. Enter the command as the shortcut path and follow the rest of the on-screen instructions to create the shortcut.

Note that the shortcut file must be run as an administrator for the command to run successfully. You can set it to always and automatically run as administrator by right-clicking the shortcut file > Properties > Shortcut tab > Advanced > Run as administrator.

To set a shortcut as a launcher, press Win + R to open the launcher window. In the Run window, type shell:startup and press Enter. This will open a folder with shortcuts to all startup programs. Move the created shortcut to the startup folder.

Automatically launches a shortcut to run the Disk Check command at each startup, so that Windows automatically ignores Disk Check at the next startup.
